How is RCM applied?

The implementation of RCM will vary between organisations and although it will follow a defined process it should be flexible to meet a companies needs. Focus should be made on what a company is aiming to achieve out of the process.

The process flow charts below define the major steps required to implement RCM effectively. These illustrate the ‘standard’ application of RCM but also ‘RCM from Remote’ as described on the Xpedite Services page. The outcome in both cases will be a maintenance solution that is heavily weighted toward non-intrusive predictive maintenance strategies.

Case Study

Xpedite were asked to analyse some candidate systems of a Royal Navy Type 22 Frigate. The aim of the anaylsis was to challenge the current prescribed maintenance strategy. This was conducted in a study group environment involving the maintainer/operator and Equipment Owner.

It is interesting to note that a test of the sewage treatment tank relief valve was derived during the process. This safety related maintenance item was not included in the original maintenance strategy, therefore, a ‘quick and dirty’ approach to RCM would not have highlighted this safety requirement.

On completion of the RCM process a maintenance comparison was conducted to show the potential manpower savings.
